6 Key Attributes Home Appliance Repairers Need To Succeed In Their Career

Home appliance repairers repair, adjust, or install all types of electric or gas household appliances, such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, and ovens.

The core tasks that home appliance repairers are likely to carry out include:

  • Disassemble appliances so that problems can be diagnosed and repairs can be made.
  • Bill customers for repair work, and collect payment.
  • Trace electrical circuits, following diagrams, and conduct tests with circuit testers and other equipment to locate shorts and grounds.
  • Service and repair domestic electrical and/or gas appliances such as clothes washers, refrigerators, stoves, and dryers.
  • Replace worn and defective parts such as switches, bearings, transmissions, belts, gears, circuit boards, or defective wiring.
  • Reassemble units after repairs are made, making adjustments and cleaning and lubricating parts as needed.

In order to successfully forge ahead with their careers, analysts in a survey carried out by U.S. Department of Labor (via O*NET) have marked out the following as important attributes that home appliance repairers would need. These attributes have been selected from characteristics and requirements strongly associated with the occupation. They are

  • Abilities: Enduring attributes of the individual that influence performance

  • Style: Personal characteristics that can affect how well someone performs a job

Having a strong preference for realistic work environments. Realistic occupations frequently involve work activities that include practical, hands-on problems and solutions. They often deal with plants, animals, and real-world materials like wood, tools, and machinery. Many of the occupations require working outside, and do not involve a lot of paperwork or working closely with others.
